Steve Wilson

Mine Planner

Steve has a background in underground mine surveying and mine planning. He has over 35 years operational experience at minesites mainly in the NSW Southern Coalfield including more than 25 years in a statutory role. His job description has included other technical services functions including strata control management for roadways and longwall.

During this time he has developed a personal interest in the interpretation of historical mine working plans for hazard identification. His planning work covers both longwall and continuous miner pillar extraction where the fundamentals of mine planning have been applied to larger volume minesite projects in both NSW and Queensland. This work generally involves not only the mining plan layout but also the sequencing and scheduling of operations for financial evaluations and assessment of ventilation and coal clearance requirements by other specialists.

His mine layout designs cover the whole spectrum of mining plan standards from conceptual layouts for resources estimates, to more detailed layouts for prefeasibility or reserve statements and on to the very detailed shorter term mine plans for annual budgeting purposes.

Since joining SCT in 2014, Steve has been involved in broad range of tasks including mining approval applications, pillar and mine design as well as ground movement and ground water monitoring. A large portion of his time has been engaged in the analysis of subsidence monitoring results for compliance reporting and estimates of subsidence effects and impact assessments for mining applications in both single seam and multi-seam mining environments.

Other areas where Steve has provided support include assessments of mining induced seismic activity from blasting activities and the processing of ground movement data from various types of monitoring installations at a number of minesites.

Steve maintains his registration as an unrestricted mining surveyor and membership of the Australian Institute of Mine Surveyors (AIMS).
